A. What are Angels?
- Created spiritual beings - Psalm 148:2,5; Nehemiah 9:6; Colossians 1:16.
- Other names for angels:
- Sons of God - Job 1:6; 2:1.
- Holy ones - Psalm 89:5,7.
- Spirits - Hebrews 1:14.
- Watchers - Daniel 4:13,17,23.
- Thrones, dominions, principalities - Colossians 1:16.
- Powers - Ephesians 1:21.
- Other kinds of heavenly beings:
- Cherubim - Genesis 3:24; Ex 25:22; Psalm 18:10; Ezekiel 10:1-22.
- Seraphim - Isaiah 6:2-7.
- Living Creatures - Ez 1:5-14; Revelation 4:6-8.
- Rank and order among angels - Daniel 10:13; 1 Thessalonians 4:16; Jude 9; Revelation 12:7-8.
- Guardian angels? - Psalm 91:11-12; Matthew 18:10; Acts 12:15; Hebrews 1:14.
- The power of angels - Hebrews 2:7.
B. The Place of Angels in God’s Purpose
- Angels show the greatness of God’s love and plan for us.
- We are made in God’s image, angels are not - Genesis 1:26.
- We will someday have authority over angels - 1 Corinthians 6:3.
- Angels cannot beget children.
- Angels that sin cannot be saved - 2 Peter 2:4; Hebrews 2:16.
- Angels remind us that the unseen world is real - 2 Kings 6:17.
- Angels are examples for us - Revelation 5:11-12.
- Angels carry out some of God's plans:
- They bring messages - Luke 1:11-19; Acts 8:26.
- They carry out God’s judgments - 2 Samuel 24:16-17; Acts 12:23.
- They accompany Jesus at His coming - Matthew 16:27.
- Angels directly glorify God - Psalm 103:20; Luke 15:10.
C. Our Relationship to Angels
- We should be aware of angels in our daily lives - Hebrews 13:2; Daniel 6:22; Acts12:7-11.
- Cautions:
- Beware of false doctrine from angels - Galatians 1:18; 2 Corinthians 11:14; 1 Kings 13:18. Mohammed’s angel; Moroni.
- Do not worship angels or pray to them - Colossians 2:18; Revelation 19:10.
D. Demons and Their Origin

E. Satan as Head of Demons
Satan
means adversary - Job 1:2-2:7; 1 Chronicles 21:1; Zechariah 3:1.
- Other names:
- The Devil - Matthew 4:1; 13:39; 25:41; Revelation 12:9; 20:2, etc.
- The Serpent - Genesis 3:1; 14:2; 2 Corinthians 11:3; Revelation 12:9; 20:2.
- Beelzebub - Matthew 10:25; 12:24,27; Luke 11:15.
- Ruler of this World - John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11.
- Prince of the Power of the Air - Ephesians 2:2.
- The Evil One - Matthew 13:19; 1 John 2:13.
F. The Activity of Satan and Demons
- Satan was the originator of sin - Genesis 3:1-6; 1 John 3:8.
- Demons oppose and try to destroy every work of God - 2 Corinthians 4:4; Galatians 4:8.
- Demons are limited by God - Job 1:12; 2:6.
We should not think that demons can know the future or that they can read our minds or know our thoughts.
G. Our Relationship to Demons
- Demons are active today.
- Not all evil and sin is from Satan, but some is - John 8:44; 1 Timothy 4:1; 2 Timothy 24-26.
- Christians cannot be
demon possessed
- Romans 6:14.
- Christians can suffer because of demons - Luke 13:11,16.
- Jesus give believers authority over demons - Luke 10:17.
- We should expect the gospel to triumph over the works of the devil - 1 John 3:8; Matthew 16:18.
